The primary function of the project is to set up a temporary communication at a disaster site assuming all pre-existing communication links would be down. This is made possible by using a Wi-Fi module that the drone carries. The module can be used to create a server which could be used to transfer data. This server has a chat interface which the rescue team members use to communicate with each other. The secondary objective of the project is to locate victims through image processing and cellular device detection.The drone carries a camera which captures an aerial video of the site. This video is transmitted to the system via the Wi channel. The system processes the video using an algorithm and detects the presence of humans in the video. This way it is possible to locate the victims in the site and this cuts down the time required for the ground troops to search and locate the victims. Moreover, the emergency response drone also consists of a mobile detector which can be used to detect the presence and locate cellular devices in the site. This could be used to locate more number of victims since all victims carrying or in the vicinity of a cellular device could be discovered even if they are buried out of sight under rubble. The cellular detection circuit coupled with the image processing system form a satisfactorily self-suficient human detection system.
Emergency response drone
The emergency response drone is basically a search and rescue drone which assists rescue teams to communicate with each other and locate victims in order to assist in rescue processes.
Earlier ground troops used to carry out search and rescue which is usually timeconsuming. Later surveillance choppers were used which proved to be expensive. In order to reduce expense drones were used. This project aims at implementing a low cost SAR drone incorporating necessary features.
Wi-Fi was selected as the mode of communication due to its popularity and wide spread use. In a disaster scenario, we cannot ascertain what devices remain functional. So in order to establish a communications link for first response teams, a popular mode that also does not require additional infrastructure to set up will be the optimal choice.
