Colours of hope

Phoenix rises with colours of hope on Prison walls. .

The students of Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology created a graffiti piece under the banner of the social initiative ‘Ray of Hope’ in association with Hermit Studios, an art studio based in Palarivattom, Ernakulam. The project was sponsored by Berger Paints India Ltd.
Prisons are often regarded as depressing environments with negativity surrounding them. Thus the major intention  of the initiative is to create an awareness in the society about the potential betterment of the lives of the prisoners. It tries to change the public’s perspective on prisons from punishment to rehabilitation. The graffiti piece picturizes a Phoenix, a mythical bird which is reborn from its own ashes. It creates an image that the life of an inmate can have a promising and a colorful future. The graffiti can be seen on the outer walls of District Jail Ernakulam, facing the Seaport Airport road. This art spans 5 walls of size 20ft*20ft, thereby covering an area of 2000 sq. ft in total. The idea was put forward by the students of Rajagiri and the design was developed by artists from Hermit Studio who collaborated with the students along with freelance artists. The work was scheduled as a 9 day venture from 6th to 14th of April, 2016.
The artwork was officially unveiled by Shri. Rishiraj Singh IPS (DGP Prisons) in the presence of Thrikkakara Municipal Chairperson Ms. Neenu KK on 14th April, 2016
